Creating a Rule of Life

What is a Rule of Life?

In this five-week study, we will be exploring the idea of a Rule of Life. What exactly is a Rule of Life, you mean be wondering?

While this curriculum will be guiding you in developing an intentional rule of life, the truth is that you already have a Rule of Life. Or, actually, many rules of life. You already have sayings, values, and beliefs that guide your everyday interactions. Rules are simply the things that guide us, consciously or subconsciously.

While the default rules that guide us are important, a Rule of Life is different, in that it is an intentional, reflective approach to naming the priorities in your life as a person of faith. A Rule of Life helps you know when to say yes and when to say no; but more than that, a Rule of Life helps you proactively align your everyday life with your faith and the things that matter most. For example, if you want to feel more grounded in the love of God, you might develop a Rule of Life that includes a daily practice of prayer. If you want to be more active in service, you might develop of Rule of Life that includes a monthly day of service.

In this five-week series, you will be invited to reflect on the ways of being that bring you into a more intentional, deeper faith. There is no right way or wrong way to do this. At the end of this season, you might have developed a simple five-word phrase as your Rule of Life, or a full document, or a piece of artwork, or a simple list. Whatever you come up with, you will be invited to post it somewhere in your home, so that you can return to it daily. My guess is that you will be surprised by how the Spirit guides you through this process and what bubbles up for you.

So welcome to the journey!
